Martial arts – Dojo
Dojo n., pl. ‘way place’, being a place where you learn the way of the martial arts.
The word ‘Dojo’ comes from Japanese literature and refers to a school for training in the Japanese arts of self-defense, such as judo and karate.
At Unigym Launceston, Dojo members and participants will benefit from a modern and specifically designed Dojo opening in March 2009 creating a serene and comfortable environment to learn the skilful talent of martial arts. It is a sacred place of learning for students and teachers alike.
Unigym Launceston offers ‘Dojo only’ memberships for members who wish to exclusively use Dojo services rather than full Unigym services and programs. For more information see Unigym’s Price List.
Aikido
Aikido is a Japanese martial art with the goal to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.
Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the aikid?ka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.
Kung Fu
Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu is a Chinese martial art system, based on pressure point striking, human bio-mechanics and scientifically proven principles, so that you can have an upper edge on your opponent. Made popular by Bruce Lee, Traditional Wing Chun is often found integrated into specialist military combat training programs for units such as the US Navy Seals.
Traditional Wing Chun has been extensively tested & proven in real one-on-one and multiple opponent scenarios on the street.
Whilst Traditional Wing Chun is primarily a true self defence system for the street and real self defence situations, its proven scientific principles, concepts and strategies can be easily applied in any street or sport combat situation.
Put simply “real skills for real life”. Please see www.wingchuntasmania.com for more information.
Judo
Judo is a modern martial art and combat sport created in Japan in 1882 by Kano Jigoro. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or takedown one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).
